Apple has been at work on a new wireless charging case for the truly wireless headphones, the AirPods, for quite some time now.
We first saw a hint of it back in September of last year, when the iOS 11 GM build leaked ahead of its public launch. And now the new wireless charging case for the AirPods has leaked again, yet again in a prerelease for an upcoming update to the iOS software platform.
The latest developer beta of iOS 12 was seeded earlier today, and, as first reported by 9to5Mac, there is an image of the upcoming and updated wireless charging case for the AirPods. It might be hard to see in the image above, but the new wireless charging case will include an LED indicator on the outside of the case, which means you won’t have to open up the case to see the charging status.
As noted in the report, these new AirPods have a model identifier of AirPods1,2, which tracks with a slightly new model as the original truly wireless headphones have a model identifier of AirPods 1,1. Unfortunately the iOS 12 developer beta 5 doesn’t include any information as to when this new wireless charging case will actually go on sale, but, maybe this year will be the year.
If you own the AirPods, how nice of a change will that LED status indicator be for you?
The status light indicator should have been on the outside from day one, but it’s good to see that Apple will finally make the change. No word on if this new wireless charging case will line up with rumors that it will work to wireless charge an iPhone, too.
