CloudMagic is Shutting Down Newton Mail on September 25

CloudMagic has offered the Newton Mail app for iOS, macOS, Android, and Windows for several years now, but it looks like the service’s final sunset is coming up soon.

The company’s founder and CEO, Rohit Nadhani, published a blog post this week that outlines the route the company will be taking as it transitions away from the Newton Mail app. The service will be shutting down on September 25 of this year. Leading up to that date, Newton Mail will no longer be accepting any new customers, and for current customers who are monthly subscribers those recurring payments will be cancelled effective immediately.

“We launched CloudMagic in 2013, which instantly became one of the breakout email apps across platforms, with love and support from over 4 million users. Later in 2016, we (re)launched a subscription-based premium email app called Newton, and over 40,000 paid subscribers signed up and have been our loyal users since. We want to say a big THANK YOU to all our users. Words cannot express our gratitude for all of you.”

Nadhani says that while the company wishes it could keep Newton Mail around, there simply isn’t a market for premium mail apps. Newton, on a monthly basis, costs $9.99 per month, and with so many free apps out there it appears Newton Mail, while popular, can’t find any real footing even all these years later.

For folks who have a yearly subscription, CloudMagic will be working with both Google and Apple to dole out partial refunds, as they will be refunded on a pro-rata basis.

Meanwhile, CloudMagic isn’t going anywhere any time soon. The company will be working on some new projects in the days ahead.

Our Take

Newton had some awesome features, but as someone who has tried it out and even used it for several months, I just kept going back to the free options out there. Still, seeing Newton go out is a sad day. If you are using Newton, which mail app will you be switching to?
