Remember the original battery case that Apple launched in 2015? It had an interesting design (that you either loved or hated) and it was originally meant for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s.
Since then, the device list the battery case supports has grown by one (the iPhone 7), but Apple hasn’t refreshed the design or launched a new version of the battery case since the original. That includes with the launch of the iPhone 8 series and the iPhone X last year. But we may be getting one this year, a few months after Apple introduced the iPhone XS series and iPhone XR.
According to an icon discovered within the second watchOS 5.1.2 beta, Apple is indeed working on a new battery case. 9to5Mac was the first to notice the new icon, which shows, on the back, a change to the camera orientation. Instead of being horizontal the cutout is vertical, indicating it will support the newest iPhone models (that don’t feature a physical Home button).
The icon in question is meant to show the charging status for the case in the widget dedicated for battery life. Based on the icon we can also see, and maybe guess a little, that the new case will be a bit smaller than the first iteration, at least at the bottom. We can’t see if it will have the same design as the original model, though, for better or worse.
Is Apple going to launch four new battery cases this year? We could see the company launch new accessories for the iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone XR. Or maybe Apple is planning on offering a new battery case for only the iPhone XS lineup. I don’t imagine we’ll see Apple launch one for the iPhone X at all. And if you don’t like the battery case idea, you could always pick up the new clear case for the iPhone XR which Apple finally launched.
Would you buy a new battery case for your newer iPhone?
