Apple is investing quite a bit into a streaming initiative that will more than likely see the light of day in 2019.
Part of building that portfolio comes from landing high-profile content, like the daytime show drama starring Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. Or, landing huge co-production deals with production companies like A24, the latter of which has just announced its first upcoming film. It’s entitled On the Rocks, and it will be directed by Sofia Coppola (The Beguiled). The film will star Bill Murray (Lost in Translation, Ghostbusters) and Rashida Jones (Angie Tribeca, Parks and Recreation).
Coppola will be co-producing with Youree Hanley, and the script was written by Coppola as well. The film will follow a young mother as she reconnects with her “larger-than-life playboy father” as they reconnect while navigating around New York City.
“Production is set to start next month in New York and marks A24 and Coppola’s second go-around, having previously partnered on “The Bling Ring.” The acquisition marks a major get for Apple’s first feature production, given the heat a Coppola-Murray package would spark with other studios.”
Apple has made some pretty big deals in this market already, but this is definitely one of the biggest. As mentioned in the original report, the combination of Coppola and Murray is a big deal. There’s no word on a release date just yet, but with production starting soon that should change before too long.
