PSA: Beware of WhatsApp Gold and Account Takeover Scam

If you are a heavy WhatsApp user, there are two scams going on currently that you should be aware of. The first one is ‘WhatsApp Gold,’ an old scam which is recirculating again. You might receive a message from an unknown number or from your friend or family warning you not to open a video called Martinelli which will be launched in WhatsApp tomorrow.

The message claims that the said video will install a virus in your phone and you should avoid updating to WhatsApp Gold. This is obviously a hoax message and you should avoid it. This was an old scam which seems to be recirculating again. It is always recommended that you only update WhatsApp from the iOS App Store or Google Play if you use an Android device.

Another more serious WhatsApp scam has been recently spreading in Singapore and neighboring regions. If you receive a message from your friend or family’s number asking you to share a WhatsApp verification code you just received on your phone, don’t do so.

After gaining access to one’s account, scammers are messaging their friends and families for gift cards or trying to gain access to their account by asking them for the verification code. So, if any of your friend or family member messages you asking for WhatsApp verification code, make sure to avoid that message.

If you have not already, it is recommended that you set up two-step verification for your WhatsApp account. This way, hackers will not be able to access your WhatsApp account even if they get their hands on the SMS-based OTP.
