A new sketchy AirPods 2 rumor claims that Apple will be unveiling it alongside AirPower and new iPads on March 29. All the devices will be unveiled by Apple at an event that will be held in the second half of March.
After that, the devices will go up for pre-order on March 22 before hitting stores on March 29. The report is based on information received from a reliable source in Apple’s production chain in China.
It further claims that AirPods 2 will come with ‘Hey Siri’ functionality similar to what we have seen on the Apple Watch Series 4. It will also feature an upgraded wireless chip. The existing AirPods make use of Apple’s W1 chip, while the company debuted its W2 chip inside the Apple Watch Series 3 in 2017. This report does not mention anything about the AirPods 2 coming with new health sensors for heart tracking or a special kind of grip coating as claimed in a sketchy rumor yesterday.
The report is light on other details about the AirPower and new iPads. However, we have previously heard from reputed sources that after a delay of over a year, the AirPower has finally gone into mass production.
As for the new iPads, Apple is expected to launch the iPad mini 5 sporting the same design language as the existing mini iPad. It will only come with upgraded internals as this would allow Apple to keep its price in check. The new 7th gen iPad will come with slightly smaller bezels and a bigger 10-inch display. It will also get an internal refresh, though details about that are not known at this point.
Given that Apple had previously launched the 6th gen iPad in March, it does seem plausible that the company will unveil a refreshed variant of the tablet along with other devices in March again this year. The new AirPods have been in the pipeline for quite a few months now and it is unlikely that Apple will wait until September this year to launch them due to the relatively modest refresh they bring to the table.
