After weeks of beta seeds, Apple is finally moving forward with the next public updates for tvOS, macOS Mojave, and watchOS.
Apple on Monday officially released software updates for all of its major platforms. The updates for macOS Mojave and watchOS 5 are relatively minor in scale, but the update for tvOS 12 does add a new feature that will help carry Apple into the future thanks to Channels and a revamped app to make finding content even easier.
Apple has updated the fourth- and fifth-generation Apple TV to tvOS 12.3. Apple recently announced a brand new, revamped Apple TV app and Channels. (Along with Apple TV+.) Apple is revamping its TV app, which is the primary focus of this new update. With the new app, there is a new machine learning initiative which is meant to offer recommendations based on an individual basis. That will be built upon your viewing history and your set preferences. Meanwhile, “For You” and the “Up Next” sections will still be prominently placed.
The next big feature for the revamped Apple TV app is called “Channels”. This is meant to make signing up for premium services like HBO, Showtime, EPIX, and more even easier. It will also make it possible to watch that supported content from directly within the TV app, rather than having to jump from one app to another to watch shows and films.
(If you want to watch content that isn’t supported within the Channels feature, like Netflix or Hulu, you’ll need to open those individual apps to do so.)
tvOS 12.3 is available now to download and install.
Meanwhile, macOS Mojave 10.14.5 is minor as it does not add any major forward-facing features for the end user. Apple is focusing primarily on behind-the-scenes fixes, tweaks, and improvements. To update, supported Mac owners simply need to open the System Preferences app –> Software Update and follow the onscreen instructions. There is also an option to automatically keep macOS updated, which, if activated, will download and install the update at a later date when the computer is plugged in.
Finally, watchOS 5.2.1. Again, another minor update. Apple is simply improving the overall experience by squashing any lingering bugs in the background. To update, Apple Watch owners must make sure that the smartwatch is connected to the iPhone and within range, has at least 50% battery lie, and is connected to the charger.
