It looks like Apple will bring back Touch ID on the iPhone sooner than expected. The company is reportedly readying an in-display Touch ID sensor for its 2020 iPhones.
Apple and its suppliers are already testing the technology. There is still a possibility of this new Touch ID sensor not making its way into iPhones until 2021 though.
Apple Inc. is developing in-screen fingerprint technology for as early as its 2020 iPhones, according to people familiar with the plans. The technology is in testing both inside Apple and among the company’s overseas suppliers, though the timeline for its release may slip to the 2021 iPhone refresh, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private work.
If Apple’s testing is successful and mass production goes as planned, it could integrate the fingerprint scanner into the 2020 iPhones. The new Touch ID sensor will live alongside Face ID and offer users a secondary form of biometric authentication. Apple is reportedly looking to integrate the in-display scanner into a large portion of the display.
Apple ditched Touch ID with the iPhone X in 2017 and completely eliminated it from its iPhone and iPad lineup last year. While Face ID has improved dramatically since its original launch, it does fail to work in some scenarios. Then there is also the fact that it is simply not as convenient to use as Touch ID in certain situations.
In-display fingerprint scanners have become a commonplace in Android smartphones, right from the mid-range ones to the flagship series. This includes the likes of the OnePlus 7 Pro, Galaxy S10 series, Galaxy Note 10 series, Huawei P30 series, and more. However, the scanning area in these phones are not big enough and on some phones like those from Samsung, the performance is also not good enough.
The Bloomberg report also reiterates reports of Apple working on a low-cost iPhone SE replacement which could launch in the first half of 2020. It will look similar to the iPhone 8 and include a 4.7-inch display along with Touch ID.
What Do You Think?
Are you excited that Apple is going to bring back Touch ID to the iPhone? The company should have never really gotten rid of it in the first place but on the bright side, it is at least bringing it back after a gap of few years.
