In July this year, Apple updated its MacBook Air lineup with a brighter True Tone display, an updated keyboard, and a lower price tag. As per IHS Markit, Apple is preparing another refresh for its MacBook Air lineup this year.
The updated MacBook Air will come with Intel’s new Amber Lake processors. There is some confusion regarding this though as Apple’s supply-chain could have confused the Amber Lake chips with the Comet Lake processors. The latter is based on Intel’s new 10nm fabrication process and includes low-power processors with up to four cores.
Intel’s naming scheme is a bit of a mess right now and it is possible that the supply chain has confused the Comet Lake processors with Amber Lake.
The last refresh from Apple did not refresh the internals or bring about any performance improvements to the MacBook Air lineup which it desperately needs. Right now, the MacBook Air lineup only comes with a dual-core processor which is good enough for some basic browsing and word processing. The new Comet Lake processors will definitely help bring about a major improvement in the MacBook Air’s multitasking performance that will make them a more capable machine.
Apple is also working on a 16-inch MacBook Pro, a 10.2-inch iPad, and the 2019 iPad Pro refresh. It is possible that we will see the company unveil all these new products at a separate media event in October.
