Google Releases Android 11 Developer Preview for Pixel Phones

Google has officially released Android 11 first Preview. It seems like Google has released the Android 11 preview early this year. Perhaps this is in order to give developers more time to work on bug fixes and improvements. Typically, Google releases First Android Preview in march every year.

As expected the first preview will not come with major UI changes. Unlike last year, Google has clearly mentioned that the preview is developer-centric and this is available by only manual download and flash. The Android 11 preview makes room for new technologies like 5G. Furthermore, it also includes under the hood improvements with respect to Privacy and Security.

Android 11 5G features

5G offers faster speeds and lower latency. The 5G experience is expected to take center stage in the near future. In Android 11 API’s are updated so that developers can take advantage of 5G’s improved speed. Dynamic meteredness API will now include cellular networks and is used to identify which carriers offer truly unmetered data when connected to a 5G network.

Android 11 People and conversations

Google seems to have extensively worked on Notifications and related features. Android 11 comes with dedicated conversations section that helps users find their ongoing conversation. Meanwhile, the Bubbles feature will let users access their conversation even they are multi-tasking across other apps. Lastly, Android 11 users will be able to insert images directly into notification replies.

Android 11 Privacy and Security features

Google has added a bunch of new Privacy and Security features on Android 11. The previous iteration came with a feature that offered users granular control over their location data and to limit background location access. On Android 11, a new “One-Time permission” feature is added. By selecting this, the user agrees to grant one-time permission for apps.

Google has added 12 new modules to Project Mainline. This means that Android 11 will be able to update more things via system-level updates linked with Play Store. At this point in time, Android 11 Developer Preview is available for Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 4 and Pixel 4a.
