Apple Announces New MacBook Air with 2x Performance, Magic Keyboard, $999 Price Tag

Apple has updated its MacBook Air lineup with faster processors from Intel, a more reliable Magic Keyboard, and a lower $999 price tag.

Thanks to the use of newer 10th generation Intel processors, Apple claims its 2020 MacBook Air lineup is up to 2x faster than the model it is replacing. For the first time, the company is bringing a quad-core processor to its Air lineup. The top-end 10th gen. Core i7 processor from Intel runs at 1.2GHz but can Turbo Boost to speeds of up to 3.8GHz. Due to the addition of two new cores, Apple claims the new MacBook Air “delivers up to two times faster performance” compared to the previous generation. The new CPU also comes with a faster Intel Iris Plus GPU that allows for 80% improvement in GPU performance.

The new Magic Keyboard replaces the unreliable butterfly keyboard found on the previous generation MacBook Air. This is the same keyboard that Apple first debuted with the 16-inch MacBook Pro last year.

“From students and consumers buying their first computer to customers looking to upgrade, everyone loves the Mac, and they especially love MacBook Air. Today we’re giving it a huge update, with two times faster performance, the new Magic Keyboard, double the storage, a new lower price of $999 and an even lower price of $899 for education,” said Tom Boger, Apple’s senior director of Mac and iPad Product Marketing. “With its stunning, thin and light design, brilliant Retina display, all-day battery life and the power and ease-of-use of macOS, MacBook Air is the world’s best consumer notebook.”

The company has also upped the base storage to 256GB and goes all the way up to 2TB. Other specs of the 2020 MacBook Air include a T2 security chip, Touch ID, Retina Display, three-mic array for clear voice capture, advanced stereo speakers, Thunderbolt 3 ports, and more.

Despite all these improvements, the new MacBook Air now has a lower $999 price tag. It will be available for order on Apple’s online store from today and in stores from next week.
