Kuo: AirPods 3 Will Have AirPods Pro-like Form Factor, Launch in H1 2021

TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claims that Apple will be launching the third-gen. AirPods in the first half of 2021. The wireless earbuds will have a form factor that’s similar to the AirPods Pro.

There is a pretty big design difference between the AirPods Pro and the 2nd gen. AirPods that’s currently available in the market. The AirPods Pro features an in-ear design ensuring that they fit snuggly in one’s ears and also passively block some noise. The regular AirPods, in comparison, do not have an in-ear design due to which they tend to easily fall out of one’s ears especially during intense activities.

Apple had announced the 2nd gen. refreshed AirPods in March 2019 so it is likely that the third-gen. AirPods will also launch around the same timeframe. The AirPods Pro packs a number of other improvements over the regular AirPods including ANC (Active Noise Cancellation), improved sound quality, sweat-resistance, and more. Some of these improvements might trickle down to the third-gen. AirPods as well, though Apple is unlikely to bring ANC to them. Instead, if the upcoming AirPods feature an in-ear design they will automatically end up blocking a certain degree of external noise passively.

In the same note, Kuo once again reiterated that the iPhone 12 lineup will not ship with EarPods in the box which in turn will help boost AirPods shipments later this year and in 2021. Apple is also expected to launch a new promotional offer related to the AirPods in the second half of this year which should further help boost their sales. If the company’s Back to School promotion is anything to go by, it is likely that iPhone 12 owners will be able to purchase the AirPods or AirPods Pro at a discount.
