Facebook to Launch “Blazing Fast” iOS App Next Month

Facebook’s iOS app is essentially a mobile website wrapped around familiar navigation elements. Most of the app is HTML5, and since Apple hasn’t brought the Nitro JavaScript engine to UIWebViews, Facebook on iPhone is annoyingly slow.

According to The New York Times’ Nick Bilton, Facebook will be throwing away the app’s HTML5 dependencies and going fully native sometime next month.

Facebook’s web and mobile apps have a new feature called “Find Friends Nearby” that, as the name suggests, lets you find friends and potential friends based on their proximity to your current location.

The feature, although not meant to be officially released, is live on Facebook’s website and mobile apps. Word about the feature’s existence was leaked out to TechCrunch.

Facebook’s smartphone ambitions have been rumored since quite sometime now, and the company has steadily made moves in that direction, by introducing the App Center, starting a payments platform and aggressively acquiring talent from startups and tech companies.

Apple and Facebook have been in talks for quite sometime. In fact, according to some reports, Apple had fully integrated Facebook into iOS 4 back in 2010, and was ready to launch the mobile-social fusion when API negotiations broke down.

Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher interviewed Apple’s CEO Tim Cook at the AllThingsD’s D10 Conference earlier today.

They asked Tim Cook questions about a range of topics. While he dodged questions about upcoming Apple products such as the rumored Apple Television (as you would expect), he did seem to hint at the possibility of Facebook Integration coming to iOS and improvements to Siri during his interview.

The New York Times reports that Facebook is planning to release a smartphone by 2013 and has hired former Apple employees who have worked on the iPhone and iPad.

This is not the first time we’re hearing rumors of a Facebook phone. Back in November 2011, a rumor claimed that the Facebook Phone existed and is codenamed “buffy”. Facebook had reportedly partnered with HTC to build these phones, which would be running a custom version of Android.
