iOS 14 Concept

iOS 14 is the next major release of iOS that Apple will officially announce at WWDC 2020. Since Apple focused on performance and stability improvements in iOS 13, we expect Apple to introduce major new features and improvements in iOS 14. It will be the fourteeth major release of the iOS mobile operating system developed by Apple Inc. for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

iOS 14 Features

It is unclear what all new features iOS 14 will bring to the table. There is a possibility of Apple redesigning the Home screen which will go well with the iPhone 12 series that are going to come with bigger displays. Apple was expected to redesign the Home screen in iOS 13, but it delayed the plans to focus on performance and stability improvements.

Safari should also get an update on iOS 14 with some new features and enhancements. Siri Shortcuts should also get some major new additions and enhancements that will make it more powerful and easier to use.

Apple has already changed its internal approach to iOS 14 development. By doing this, the company hopes to avoid shipping the OS with a lot of broken features and bugs like it happened with iOS 13.

On February 20, a report claimed that iOS 14 could possibly allow users to change the default mail and browser apps to a third-party client of their choice. If true, this would be a big deal as Apple does not allow users to change the default system apps in iOS.

On February 24, a purported video of iOS 14 running on iPhone 11 Pro claimed that Apple may change the UI of the App Switcher in iOS 14. The short video showed the new multitasking UI which can fit up to four apps on the screen at one time. Users can then swipe to the right to scroll through all the open apps. One can dismiss a running app by simply swiping up on the card. However, as developer Guilherme Rambo pointed out that there is an internal setting that has been there since iOS 11 that allows you to switch to four apps layout in the app switcher. So we are not sure if Apple will switch to this new layout in iOS 14.

On March 10, a report claimed that the next major version of iOS will come with a all-new fitness app which will offer guided workout apps. It will also come with improved OCR capabilities for Apple Pencil. Apple may also introduce new features for iMessage. This includes a new mention system where users will be able to catch the attention of a particular person by using @ and then typing their name. This will then send that user a notification even if they have that group muted.

Apple may also bundle a new AR app, which will provide users with more information about the world around them. This AR experience will also lay the groundwork for Apple’s AR headset. The app will integrate with Apple’s own retail stores and Starbucks. Users will be able to hold their phone in front of an Apple Store and get information about the displayed products, pricing, compare their features, and more. Apple could use QR code-like tags or iBeacons or even AirTags to trigger the AR experience.

According to iOS 14 leaks on March 10 and April 4, Apple may finally redesign iPhone’s iconic Home screen by allowing users to view all their installed applications in a list view. Apple is also working to implement widgets right on the Home screen, which can be moved freely just like we can do with app icons currently. The feature is internally codenamed “Avacado”.

Apple will offer improved categorization of wallpapers by adding new categories. More importantly, Apple will allow third-party apps to directly integrate with the Wallpaper option in the Settings menu. This means third-party wallpaper apps will be able to integrate and show their wallpaper collections right in the Wallpaper settings menu. Leaked iOS 14 screenshots reveals a new “Home Screen Appearance” option, and a new Collections menu that users can populate their own photos. On March 19, a report claimed that the next iOS version will allow users to change wallpers for CarPlay.

Apple may also integrate its #shotoniphone campaign in the Photos app. This will allow users to directly upload any photo that they have taken from their iPhone to the challenge and also view the results of the competition.

Apple is focusing on further improving the accessibility aspect of iOS with iOS 14. The OS will automatically detect sounds like fire alarms, doorbells, sirens, etc. and convert them into alerts for people with hearing impairments. Another new accessibility feature will allow the camera app to detect hand gestures. Audio Accommodations will also be there which “can improve audio tuning over AirPods or EarPods for people with mild to moderate hearing loss.”

iOS 14 may also include new HomeKit features such as face recognition support for security cameras and Night Shift for smart lights.

Code found in an internal build of iOS 14 points to Apple working with BMW for a new ‘CarKey’ feature in the OS. When the first iOS 13.4 beta was released, it was discovered that Apple was working on allowing one to use their iPhone as a car key to keyless access. It was later also revealed that one could share the digital car key over iMessage.

iOS 14 Compatible Devices

iOS 13 dropped support for iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, two iPhones that are still very popular. Apple is not expected to drop support for any older iPhones in iOS 14. A rumor also says the same.

The following devices are going to be compatible with iOS 14:

iOS 14 Release Date

Apple will follow the same release date cycle for iOS 14 as iOS 13 and older releases of the OS. This means iOS 14 will be officially announced at WWDC 2020 which will be held in the first half of June. Apple has announced that it will be an online-only event due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company will also release the first iOS 14 beta on the same day and then release a new beta build every few weeks.

The final build of iOS 14 will be released to the public in September along with the launch of the new iPhone 12 series.
