Few days back a leaked internal memo revealed that Apple was advising its Genius Bar employees of low iPhone 3GS stock.
The fact that iOS 6 that will be released later this month will also support iPhone 3GS, seemed to indicate that Apple will not discontinue it, but the low stock sparked speculation that Apple is preparing to finally discontinue the third generation iPhone.

The timing of the internal memo is interesting as Apple is widely expected to launch the next generation iPhone at a media event on September 12, less than two weeks from now.
According to leaked parts and rumors, the next generation iPhone is expected to come with a taller display and thinner than iPhone 4S/iPhone 4.

iPhone Dev team has just released a new version of Redns0w that finally allows iPhone 3GS users to downgrade from 06:15:00 baseband.
Back in 2010, iPhone Dev team had released a solution that allowed users to unlock their iPhone 3GS by upgrading the baseband to 06.15.00. Unfortunately, the solution caused GPS issues and it was also not possible to downgrade the baseband.
While the original iPad, and the iPod touch 3rd gen won’t be getting the iOS 6 software update, the older iOS devices that are compatible with iOS 6 won’t get all the features.
Apple typically does this to ensure that the OS is speedy enough on older hardware. (No MMS on original iPhone, no wallpaper on iPhone 3G, no Siri on iPhone 4)
