World's First Software Method to Unlock iPhone 3G will be Released Today [Updated]

The iPhone dev team will be releasing their software method to unlock iPhone 3G today.

They had announced that they will be releasing the world's first software method to unlock iPhone 3G on New Year's eve and had also broadcasted the live demo of an iPhone 3G being unlocked.

Bushing, Pytey, Musclenerd and Planetbeing, the iPhone hacking geniuses from the Dev Team gave a one hour presentation at the 25th Chaos Communication Congress (25C3) in Berlin on December 27th about jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone.

iPhone Dev Team Broadcast Live Demo of iPhone 3G being Unlocked using their Software Method

The iPhone Dev team who are planning to release the much awaited software method to unlock iPhone 3G on New Year's eve have just broadcasted a live demo video of an iPhone 3G being software unlocked with yellowsn0w (name of their project to unlock iPhone 3G) via Qik.

iPhone Dev Team: Software Method to Unlock iPhone 3G to be Released on New Year’s Eve; Possible Fixes for DFU Problems with Mac OS X 10.5.6 Update [Updated]

The 10.5.6 update for Mac OS X Leapord that Apple released yesterday prevents your Mac from recognizing your iPhone in DFU mode, making it impossible to jailbreak and/or unlock it using PwnageTool or QuickPwn.

The iPhone Dev Team believes that it is due to a kernel bug rather than a specific countermeasure by Apple. They have also provided possible fixes.

But more importantly they have also provided the release date for their software unlocking method for iPhone 3G which we all have been waiting for.

Breaking News: Linux Ported to the iPhone

iPhone Dev Team has just announced that Linux 2.6 kernel has been successfully ported to the iPhone.

Dev team member planetbeing has been credited for achieving this milestone along with CPICH, cmw, poorlad, ius and saurik. They have been able to achieve it by reverse engineering Apple's hardware drivers.

Thanks to their effort, Linux is now available for 1st gen iPhone, iPhone 3G as well as the 1st gen iPod Touch.

iPhone Dev Team Releases Pwnage Tool 2.2.1 which Fixes Bug related to "Simple Mode"

The iPhone Dev Team had released PwnageTool 2.2, QuickPwn 2.2 for Mac & QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows yesterday for iPhone Firmware 2.2 that was released by Apple on Thursday night.

However, there was a minor bug where iPhone users had problems using the "Simple Mode" in PwnageTool  and as a workaround had to use the "Expert Mode".

They has just released Pwnage Tool v2.2.1 which fixes the bug related to "Simple Mode".

Dev Team Releases PwnageTool 2.2, QuickPwn 2.2 for Mac & QuickPwn 2.2 for Windows; Supports iPhone Firmware 2.2

The ever-so dependable iPhone Dev team have delivered yet again. They have released updated versions of their PwnageTool and QuickPwn Tools to jailbreak and unlock the 1st Gen iPhone and jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.2 that was released by Apple only on Thursday night.

They have also updated the PwnageTool so that you can create a custom firmware (.ipsw) which will not contain the baseband update but still bring the new features of iPhone firmware 2.2 to iPhone 3G.

iPhone Dev Team: Users who want to Unlock iPhone 3G should NOT Update their iPhones with Firmware 2.2

Apple released iPhone firmware 2.2 last night which includes most of the features we had heard about in the last few months such as Google Street View, Podcast over-the-air download and includes fix for the Safari crashes and the iPhone Safari exploit that was reported yesterday.

However, earlier this week the dev team had warned iPhone 3G users who are looking forward to unlock their iPhone 3Gs to avoid upgrading to iPhone firmware 2.2 until they don't give an all clear.

They have just published a post on their blog confirming that users who want to unlock iPhone 3G should NOT update their iPhones with the latest firmware update.

Dev Team Publish Video to Demonstrate Ability to Run BackGround Tasks; Even Closer to Unlocking iPhone 3G

The iPhone Dev Team has published a video to demonstrate that they are now able to run background tasks on iPhone 3G.

When the dev team had cracked iPhone 3G's baseband couple of weeks back we had mentioned that they were closer to unlocking iPhone 3G.

With this ability to spawn background tasks, they are now even closer to release the much-awaited software method to unlock iPhone 3G as they can see a clear path to follow.
