They have fixed some of the problems which iPhone 3G users had reported with the latest version of their unlocking application yellowsn0w v0.9.6.

Bushing, Pytey, Musclenerd and Planetbeing, the iPhone hacking geniuses from the Dev Team gave a one hour presentation at the 25th Chaos Communication Congress (25C3) in Berlin on December 27th about jailbreaking and unlocking the iPhone.

The 10.5.6 update for Mac OS X Leapord that Apple released yesterday prevents your Mac from recognizing your iPhone in DFU mode, making it impossible to jailbreak and/or unlock it using PwnageTool or QuickPwn.
The iPhone Dev Team believes that it is due to a kernel bug rather than a specific countermeasure by Apple. They have also provided possible fixes.
But more importantly they have also provided the release date for their software unlocking method for iPhone 3G which we all have been waiting for.

iPhone Dev Team has just announced that Linux 2.6 kernel has been successfully ported to the iPhone.
Dev team member planetbeing has been credited for achieving this milestone along with CPICH, cmw, poorlad, ius and saurik. They have been able to achieve it by reverse engineering Apple's hardware drivers.
Thanks to their effort, Linux is now available for 1st gen iPhone, iPhone 3G as well as the 1st gen iPod Touch.

The ever-so dependable iPhone Dev team have
delivered yet again. They have released updated versions of their
PwnageTool and QuickPwn Tools to jailbreak and unlock the 1st Gen iPhone
and jailbreak iPhone 3G running iPhone firmware 2.2 that was released
by Apple only on Thursday night.
They have also updated the PwnageTool so that you can create a custom firmware (.ipsw) which will not contain the baseband update but still bring the new features of iPhone firmware 2.2 to iPhone 3G.

Apple released iPhone firmware 2.2 last night which includes most of the features we had heard about in the last few months such as Google Street View, Podcast over-the-air download and includes fix for the Safari crashes and the iPhone Safari exploit that was reported yesterday.
However, earlier this week the dev team had warned iPhone 3G users who are looking forward to unlock
their iPhone 3Gs to avoid upgrading to iPhone firmware 2.2 until they don't give an all clear.

The iPhone Dev Team has published a video to demonstrate that they are now able to run background tasks on iPhone 3G.
When the dev team had cracked iPhone 3G's baseband couple of weeks back we had mentioned that they were closer to unlocking iPhone 3G.
With this ability to spawn background tasks, they are now even closer to release the much-awaited software method to unlock iPhone 3G as they can see a clear path to follow.
