You might have observed that iPhone syncing with firmware 2.0 takes a very long time. The real culprit for this is the iPhone backup process which takes majority of the time.
It appears that the reason for the long time taking backups is because iTunes is taking a complete snapshot of the iPhone applications that you have installed on your iPhone for restoring purpose instead of taking back up of only the applications documents and library data.

After you have bought the new iPhone 3G (to be rolled out on Friday, July 11) and have replaced your original iPhone with new iPhone 3G and have verified that its restored with the personal data from the original iPhone, I guess the next logical step would be to sell the original iPhone unless ofcourse you want to use it as a Wi-Fi iPod or have already sold it.

We have been speculating that iPhone firmware 2.0 will be available to
all iPhone users towards the end of June or early July as we were not
aware of the exact release date.
The speculations can be put to rest as the release date of the much awaited
iPhone firmware 2.0 has been revealed thanks to a tip from TUAW reader.
The source of the release date is none other than Apple's iPhone 3G
press release which we seemed to have completely missed out.

One of the most common (and obvious) recommendation before hacking the iPhone is to backup the iPhone so that if things go horribly wrong you can at least restore your iPhone to avoid losing any of your settings such as sound settings, widget settings, certain network settings, and other preferences and information such as text messages, notes, call history contact favorites etc.
