Evasi0n Used To Jailbreak 7 Million iOS Devices In Four Days, Making It The Most Popular Jailbreak Ever
Couple of days back, we reported that evasi0n was used to jailbreak 4 million iOS devices.
We’ve an update on those statistics. Jay Freeman aka saurik, founder of Cydia has told Forbes that 7 million iOS devices have been jailbroken using evasi0n in four days.
Last year, Nicholas Allegra a.k.a Comex – developer of some of the most popular jailbreak tools like JailbreakMe and Spirit had announced that he was joining Apple as an intern. It was a big blow to the jailbreak community.
But here’s an interesting development. Comex has just tweeted that he is no longer associated with Apple.
As it turns out, we were quite late in reporting the news as saurik is indeed the new owner of the JailbreakMe.com domain, as the person who had initially bought it from ConceitedApps was kind enough to transfer it to Saurik.
This news comes after Comex – developer of the popular jailbreak tool joined Apple as an intern recently.
Comex, the hacker behind jailbreaking tools like JailbreakMe and Spirit and soon to be Apple intern, is very active on Reddit and recently agreed to do an IAmA on the site. An IAmA is reddit speak for a Q&A session. Although he was candid all through the session, as part of his contract with Apple he didn’t answer any questions about his internship with the company.

Comex had recently released JailbreakMe 3.0 – one of the easiest solutions to jailbreak iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch for iOS 4.3.3, which used a userland exploit to jailbreak and install Cydia on an iOS device using mobile Safari. Apple had to release an iOS 4.3.4 software update to patch the vulnerability.

Apple had released iOS 4.3.4 to fix the vulnerability used by JailbreakMe 3.0, which was one of the easiest solutions to jailbreak iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Comex had also released a patch called PDF Patcher 2 on Cydia to fix the vulnerability associated with viewing malicious PDF files.
It was meant for users you didn’t want to upgrade to iOS 4.3.4, but also didn’t want to be exposed to the security vulnerability.
