"How can I install Installer app on the iPhone OS v1.1.1?" has probably been one of the most commonly asked question from iPhone owners who have Windows. The reason for this is due to the fact that we have not seen any instructions to install the cool Installer app on their iPhone running OS v1.1.1, the easiest way to get unauthorized third-party iPhone applications on the iPhone. It seemed like only the Mac users have been blessed by the iPhone hacking community.
However, thanks to a tip from grkfire, one of the readers here @ iPhone Hacks, there is a GUI based tool called "TouchFree" though developed for iPod Touch can also be used to jailbreak iPhone v1.1.1 and also install Installer app on your iPhone. But before you get all excited, read the details after the jump.
If you have been keeping a close watch on developments in the iPhone hacking space you would have heard of the cool Installer.app
or AppTap iPhone application which simplifies application management, i.e. installation and uninstallation of unauthorized third-party iPhone applications on your iPhone over Wi-Fi.
Nullriver, the iPhone hackers who have developed this killer iPhone Application have just launched Installer.app v3.0 beta3 with many improvements over the previous version.
When I had written an article which covered all the iPhone Apps that helped you add custom ringtones to your iPhone rather than paying Apple the additional 99c to add a song as a ringtone, surprisingly more than 15% of the readers of iPhone Hacks who took the poll on which iPhone App they will be using to add custom ringtones to their iPhone chose "SendSong", a neat little utility and as the name suggest allows you to not only send a song from your iPhone library to a friend via email or use it as a ringtone developed by Erica Sadun over @ Tuaw now a iPhone hacking legend.
TalkPlus App: iPhone Users can have Multiple Numbers and also Offers an Interesting Option for Cheaper International Calls
Elita Cheung over at TalkPlus was kind enough to drop in a line to inform me about their iPhone app which was released yesterday. If you are one of those who is carrying another phone with the "jesus phone" to manage your personal and work life then you won’t need it any more with TalkPlus service.
It also seems like an interesting option for making cheaper international calls from your iPhone.
Add Unlimited Custom Ringtones to your iPhone with iToner v1.0.3 NOW compatible with iPhone OS v1.1.1
If you have been a regular reader @ iPhone Hacks you would have observed that in the iPhone hacking world; every time we have a new major firmware update from Apple we seem to be getting into a vicious cycle, it starts with Jailbreaking, then unlocking and eventually figuring out a way to install the cool but unauthorized iPhone applications.
One of the victims of the now infamous iPhone OS v1.1.1 were the iPhone applications that allowed you to add custom ringtones to your iPhone; one of those applications was iToner. Ambrosia SW maker’s of iToner have just released the latest version of iToner which is compatible with iPhone OS v1.1.1.
Steve Jobs has just announced on Apple’s website that they want Third Party Applications on the iPhone and are currently working on an SDK which will be released in February. This is indeed great news coming out finally from Apple.
Steve Jobs had this reason to give for the February launch "It will take until February to release an SDK because we’re trying to do two diametrically opposed things at once—provide an advanced and open platform to developers while at the same time protect iPhone users from viruses, malware, privacy attacks, etc. This is no easy task."
However, it doesn’t seem like the platform will be completely open as if you read between the lines, Apple might go the Nokia way of allowing only those applications to be installed on the iPhone that have a digital signature so that it can be traced back to a known developer which in my opinion is a reasonable approach to protect users from malicious programs.
This is definitely a step in the right direction from Apple instead of keeping the iPhone, possibly the best mobile platform ever created for developers, as a closed platform and could be a game-changer. Thanks Steve Jobs and Apple for listening and heeding to the demands of iPhone owners who have been rather critical of your "so far closed platform" approach since the launch.
We will be looking forward to the "vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for iPhone users" which you are promising. It seems like well deserved Valentine’s day gift for the iPhone fanboys.
BTW, Steve Jobs did add that the SDK will also allow developers to create applications for iPod touch.

Thanks Judson for the tip.

We had heard rumors that all was not right for the launch of Apple iPhone in France thanks to a law passed in 1998, which requires that carriers unlock any phone upon customer request i.e. for a fee during the first six months of a contract and for free after that.
Folks @ Engadget are now reporting that the iPhone in France will in fact be sold in not one but two versions, an locked handset from Orange for 399 euros, and an unlocked version for an as you-would-expect higher price (though the price is still to be announced).
So looks like we will soon have three options of unlocking the iPhone: the free unlocking method from the iPhone hackers, the not-for-free unlocking method from iPhoneSIMFree and the third but a more legitimate way of paying the extra amount for the unlocked iPhone from Orange.
BTW, Apple iPhone will be launched in France on November 29th so you know when to plan your holidays to France.
Its unfortunate to see that its a law that has forced Apple to buckle down to release an unlocked iPhone, lets hope they see the benefits and decide to go with a similar strategy in other countries as well.
Let me know your thoughts in the comments!
Update (18th October):
Unfortunately, Gizmodo has come out and has stopped the celebrations which were about to start by reporting that "Apple told us that the piece was based solely off of reading French Law, not from statements by Orange or Apple."
However, it is still not ruled out, there is still hope thanks to the law but please keep your holiday plans to France on hold for now. Click here to read Gizmodo’s article on this subject.
Breaking News: anySIM v1.1 – Free GUI based SIM Unlock tool for (Virgin) iPhone OS v1.1.1 released by iPhone/iTouch Dev Team
It was only a matter of time if you have known the iPhone hacking geniuses over at the iPhone Dev Team. They have been working hard since the now in-famous iPhone v1.1.1 update and have delivered again by releasing the latest version of their free GUI-based SIM unlocking solution "anySIM v1.1" for virgin (details available after the jump) iPhone OS v1.1.1.
If you go by the instructions available to unlock the iPhone OS v1.1.1 it seems like this time round the iPhone Dev Team have done one better then the not-for-free unlocking solution from iPhoneSIMFree by making it a lot more easier to unlock the iPhone.
In my last article on iPhone tips & tricks I had provided a crude workaround to sync notes from your iPhone. You will soon have a better way to do this. Reason: Apple has announced today that the much awaited Mac OS X Leopard will be arriving on October 26th and the good news if you are an iPhone owner is that amongst the 300+ new features in Leopard it is also confirmed that notes syncing will be finally coming to the iPhone.
Here is the details of the Notes feature which confirms this news "Write handy notes you can access from anywhere — including graphics, colored text, and attachments. Group notes into folders or create Smart Mailboxes that automatically group them. Your notes folder acts like an email mailbox, so you can retrieve notes from any Mac or PC or access them from your iPhone."
However, based on this feature description it appears that you will need a .Mac account ".Mac Sync for Notes – Access notes from anywhere, including your other computers, by syncing them with your .Mac account."
PS: I have decided to write shorter articles like this one in addition to the regular articles going forward for the benefit of regular readers @ iPhone Hacks so that you don’t miss out on any iPhone-related news.
If you were looking for an easy way to jailbreak your iPhone on OS v1.1.1 then the latest version of iNdependence which v1.2.2 which works with iPhone OS v1.1.1 could be the solution. Unfortunately it is still not "the one click install" solution that mike a reader @ iPhone Hacks or I had hoped for, but it is definitely an attempt by developers of iNdependence to simplify the process of jailbreaking iPhone OS v1.1.1.
