White iPhone 4 Spotted; Possible Reason For Delay Revealed

When Apple launched iPhone 4, we were all told that it would be arriving in two color options – Black and White. While the black iPhone has been launched and is now fairly common, there is no sign of the white iPhone, which was supposed to be here by the second half of July initially.

Back then, Apple had issued the following statement:

"White models of Apple's new iPhone 4 have proven more challenging to manufacture than expected, and as a result they will not be available until the second half of July. The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected."

If that wasn't all, in July, Apple announced that the availability of the iPhone 4 would be delayed to “later this year”  By then, people had already started speculating the reasons for the delay.

Some industry observers had indicated potential quality control issues arising due to the white coloring on the front glass panel of iPhone 4 – while some others observed that the “Antennagate” issue that plagued the iPhone 4 was the reason for the delay. It was also speculated that the reason for the delay was due to the back light leaking out through the edges of the glass to the back casing of the device.

Anyway, while the white iPhone 4 is yet to be officially available, there are quite a few lucky folks out there who are actually in possession of one – thanks to their contacts at Apple. Folks from Pocket-Lint came across a user who was in possession of a white iPhone at a press event held in New York yesterday. While the identity of the individual has been hidden for obvious reasons, they did manage to snap a few pictures of the white iPhone 4.

As expected, they asked him how he got hold of one and later, if he was aware of the reasons for the delay in the arrival of the iPhone in white and guess what the reason is? According to the insider, the shade of white on the home button of the phone isn't matching with that of the rest of the front panel. Apparently Apple's suppliers haven't been able to resolve the issue, which has resulted in the delay.

The question is, how long will it take to fix this issue. Apple has scheduled a major event next week where the focus would be on the Mac platform – but that would be a nice occasion to make an announcement regarding the availability of the white iPhone 4.

Have you been delaying your iPhone 4 purchase because you always wanted one in white? How much longer are you prepared to wait for the white iPhone 4?
