iOS 5 Beta 2 Blocks iPhone 4 Unlock Using Gevey SIM

Gevey SIM

Back in March, we reported that it was possible to unlock iPhone 4 basebands 04.10.01 (bundled with iOS 4.3, iOS 4.3.1, iOS 4.3.2, iOS 4.3.3), 03.10.01 (bundled with iOS 4.2.1), 02.10.04 (bundled with iOS 4.1) using Gevey SIM card.

Gevey SIM Interproser doesn’t need users to jailbreak their iPhone as it works by forcing the activation of the baseband using the emergency dialer.

Its legality has been questioned as the hack works using the emergency dialer (by dialing 112), which is illegal in the U.S. and some other countries.

MuscleNerd of the iPhone Dev team has revealed that Apple has fixed the Gevey Interproser hole in iOS 5 beta 2 that was released yesterday. The unlocking solution worked in iOS 5 beta 1.

it’s surprising Apple closed Gevey interposer hole in b2 rather than waiting until final (maybe they were under pressure)

Meanwhile, users are also waiting for the iPhone Dev team to release Ultrasn0w, the software method to unlock iPhone. On the jailbreaking front, Redsn0w 0.9.8b1 released to jailbreak iOS 5 beta 1 can also jailbreak iOS 5 beta 2, the trick is to point Redsn0w to iOS 5 beta 2 firmware file.

Let us know what you think of Apple’s latest move to block the iPhone 4 unlock using Gevey SIM in the comments section below.
