Next-Generation iMac To Offer Television Functionality?

We’ve had plenty of rumors about an Apple-branded TV, but this one is quite different. According to one particular analyst, Apple’s next-generation iMacs will come with Apple TV functionality built-in.

Brian Blair, an analyst for Wedge Partners, thinks that the next generation of iMacs will be out in the first half of 2012, and they’ll be coming with a special bonus. Blair thinks that the big feature will be Apple TV functionality built into them.

There have been quite a few rumors out about an Apple-branded TV, including two reports that claim it will arrive in a range of sizes, from 32″ to 55″.  Blair has a slightly different opinion on this:

“We think this makes sense because while we typically think about the newest TV’s hanging on the wall in large form factors, Apple could effectively start with what they already have on the manufacturing line and slowly push their offering from 27 inches and scale up from there to 32 inches and then move on to the 42, 50 and 55 inch market,” he writes. “In short, we believe the initial Apple TV is their iMac computer that can function as a TV, over the iCloud platform.”

It definitely makes sense to integrate TV functionality on iMacs, since they already have huge screens as well as optional Apple remotes. Will this be alongside a television, or in lieu of one? Unfortunately, we can’t answer that question yet.

MacRumors points out that Blair doesn’t offer support for his claim, and does regard it as speculation.

What do you think? Would you buy an iMac with and Apple TV built in?
