Kotaku reports that Apple is gearing up to launch a smaller and cheaper iPad mini in the third quarter of this year, according to a report Chinese website – NetEase.
NetEase claimed that the device will be released around the third quarter of this year to “counter attack” the upcoming Windows tablets. The report further claims that the devices will cost anywhere from US$249 to $299 and that there will be an initial 6 million units ready for launch.

The chatter of a smaller iPad has only grown louder since Amazon launched Kindle Fire – their 7-inch Android based tablet, which has been extremely successful.
Few days back, John Gruber of Daring Fireball, who has a good track record when it comes to Apple related news, added yet more weight to the rumors claiming that Apple does have a 7.85-inch iPad in their labs during his Talk Show podcast with Dan Benjamin.
