Apple is widely expected to launch the next generation iPhone, unofficially dubbed, iPhone 5S in July or August, but folks at GooPhone, the wizards of Chinese knockoffs have launched an iPhone 5S/iPhone 5 knock off called GooPhone i5S.
Alan, one of our readers sent us a link to the hands-on video of the device. As you can see, it is difficult to make out the difference between Goophone’s i5S and the iPhone 5. They have also managed to give the operating system the look and feel of iOS by installing the iOS theme launcher on top of Android 4.1.
But that’s where the similarities end. Goophone’s i5S is powered by Mediatek’s 1GHz MT6577 processor with 512MB of RAM (unlike iPhone 5’s dual core 1.2GHz A6 processor with 1GB RAM), 4-inch display with 854×480 pixel resolution (compared to iPhone 5’s 4-inch Retina Display with 1136×640 pixel resolution), comes with a 5-megapixel camera (not the 8-megapixel camera), storage of 8GB (iPhone 5 is available in storage options of 16GB, 32GB and 64GB), only 3G support (no 4G LTE network), Wi-Fi is limited to 802.11 b/g (compared to iPhone 5’s support for 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi (802.11n 2.4GHz and 5GHz)) and Bluetooth 2.0 (and not the energy efficient Bluetooth 4.0).
It also goes without saying that the build quality of such knock-offs won’t be anywhere close to Apple’s iPhone, which is the gold standard when it comes to smartphones.
Goophone is hoping that people will buy the iPhone 5 knockoff by selling it for just $149, which is a fraction of the cost of the iPhone.
It’s quite amazing that Goophone and other Chinese manufacturers continue to flood the market with such iPhone clones, despite all the design patents Apple has in China.
Thanks Alan for the tip!
