Apple starts offering free content in Apple Store app

As expected, Apple has started offering free content in the Apple Store app.

The first app to be available for free is Color Zen, a puzzle game that is usually available for $0.99.

Apple had rolled out a new version of the Apple Store app with an all-new design, in line with other apps like the iTunes Store, and also to give them the capability to offer free content from content from iTunes Store, App Store, and iBookstore.

To option to download the app is available on pages for Apple retail stores. Launch the app, tap on the Stores tab and navigate to any Apple retail store, you should see an option such as “A game just for you. On us,” tap on it and then on the Download now for free button. You will be prompted with a message informing you that “you are now leaving the Apple Store app and your download will begin automatically” and going to the App Store. Tap on the Continue button, which will launch the App Store app and take you the Redeem page, with the redeem code auto-populated. Tap on the Redeem button, it will prompt you to enter your Apple ID password, enter it. You will be told that you’ve successfully redeem your code and iOS will automatically download the app.

It is apparently part of Tim Cook’s strategy to get more people to buy Apple products through its retail stores. As you can see from the screenshot above, the current offer expires on August 27.

Do you think this will get more people to buy Apple products through its retail stores or the Apple Store app? Doubt it. Let us know how it goes, and if you are able to download the free app in your country.
