Apple today released a major Apple TV software update which brings a number of new features to the 2nd and 3rd generation Apple TV. The release earlier was seeded as Apple TV Software Update 5.4 beta to registered developers of the iOS developer program, and is now available for public consumption.
Main features of the iOS 7 update for Apple TV, which is officially named as “Apple TV 6.0”:
- Support for iTunes Radio, Apple’s new free, ad-supported music streaming service.
- A new Conference Room Display mode, which makes it easier to connect an iOS device with the Apple TV via AirPlay.
- An easy, NFC-like Bluetooth pairing setup for the iPhone.
- AirPlay from iCloud: Where you can use your iOS device to play videos on the Apple TV from iTunes in the cloud, much like Google’s Chromecast.
- iCloud photos and videos: You can view photos and videos from your shared photo streams
- Podcasts: Sync podcasts and podcast stations across your iOS devices and Apple TV
You can update your Apple TV via the Settings menu (General -> Update Software).
The update was earlier expected to be announced at Apple’s iPhone event and later on the same day as the iOS 7 release, but it looks like the excessive server load forced Apple to delay its launch.
Let us know how the upgrade goes, and your thoughts about the new features.
