Google Hangouts updated with iOS 7 design, iPad optimizations, Video messaging and animated stickers

hangouts-mainGoogle updated Hangouts for iOS, overhauling the app with a new, flat design that mirrors the look and feel of iOS 7. Hangouts is a messaging app that ties into your Google account and allows you to send and receive messages, photos, videos and animated stickers with other Google users.

Besides a new iOS 7 design, Hangouts is now optimized for the iPad with picture-in-picture video calling that takes advantage of extra screen real estate of the iPad. Other new features allow you to share a map of your current location and record video messages up to 10 seconds long that can be sent to other users.

This update brings Hangouts to version 2.0.0 and follows a minor bug fix release that was rolled out in November of last year. The full list of changes in the latest version of Hangouts includes:

  • Fully-optimized for the iPad, including picture-in-picture video calling
  • Animated stickers that help you share exactly how you’re feeling
  • Record and send video messages up to 10 seconds long
  • Send a map of your current location
  • Optimized for iOS 7

The last major update was released in October of 2013 and brought free voice calling to US and Canadian users. Version 2.0.0 of Google Hangouts is available now for free from the iOS App Store.
