When you purchase something like Apple’s Mac Pro, keeping it safe is a necessary step, even if that means you have to lock it down like a bike on a rack. Apple has made that easier for anyone who owns a Mac Pro, thanks to an official security lock adapter.
Third-party options to lock down the Mac Pro have existed since the desktop machine’s release in 2013, but most of those tools were pretty expensive. Do-it-yourself projects were an alternative for some, but for the people out there who have been waiting for an official product from Apple, the wait is now over. The company has officially released their Mac Pro Security Lock Adapter, which you can buy now through the Apple Online store. You can’t pick it up in-store quite yet.
The lock adapter itself is simple enough: a metal bracket that secures the lift-off cover of the machine to the base with a security cable. This means that thieves will have a harder time getting into the mini-tower’s internals. Securing the cable to something heavy, or even a dedicated object on a desk or floor adds that extra benefit of having the Mac Pro locked down.
Here’s the product description from Apple:
“The Mac Pro Security Lock Adapter lets you use a compatible Kensington or similar style third-party lock (sold separately) to keep your Mac Pro secure. The adapter attaches without tools and does not modify or damage the Mac. With a compatible lock connected, the Mac Pro Lock Adapter secures the housing to the enclosure, preventing access to internal components.“
The Mac Pro Security Lock Adapter is listed for $49.99. Do you plan on picking one up?[via Apple]
