Apple has just released the 12-inch MacBook at its ‘Spring Forward’ event in the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts today.
With its new MacBook, Apple claims that is it has reinvented the notebook once again. The new MacBook is only 13.1, thin, which is 24% thinner than the current-gen 11-inch MacBook Air. It is also the lightest MacBook ever from Apple and weighs in at only 2 pounds.
The thinner design of the new MacBook forced Apple to come up with a completely new keyboard, which comes with a new ‘Butterfly mechanism’. This new mechanism allows for 40% thinner keys, 17% larger key cap and is 4x times more stable. It also comes with a new backlit mechanism that has an individual LED for each key.
The 12-inch Retina display on the new MacBook is only 0.88mm thin and sports a resolution of 2304 x 1440. Despite coming with 3.3 million pixels, it consumes 30% less energy.
The new MacBook also comes with a new “Force Touch trackpad” that features four Force sensors and a Tapic engine. To take advantage of the new sensors, Apple has included a new gesture called “force click” as well that rely on the amount of pressure applied on them to perform specific actions. The actions done by the “force click” are contextual and will vary depending on the application it is used inside.
The 12-inch MacBook comes with a unibody architecture, and is the first MacBook to sport a fanless design. It is powered by Intel’s 5th generation Core M processor, which will be available in up to 1.3GHz variants that can turbo boost up to 2.9GHz.
To make more efficient use of space, the new MacBook comes with contoured battery that allows for “all-day” battery life that allows for up to 9 hours of wireless web browsing, or up to 10 hours of iTunes movie playback. Apple claims that the new MacBook is the world’s most efficient notebook, while also being its most environmental friendly product as well.
As for connectivity, the new MacBook comes with dual-band Wi-Fi ac and Bluetooth 4.0.
Another impressive feature of the MacBook Air is that it comes with a single USB-C port that can act as a USB port, DisplayPort, Power port, VGA and more. As Apple claimed at the event, the single port can act as five different ports. The USB-C port is also reversible in nature just like Apple’s Lightning port.
The 12-inch MacBook will be available in Silver, Space Gray and “stunning Gold.” The base model of the new MacBook will be available from $1,299, and come with a 1.1GHz dual-core Core M processor, 8GB RAM, and 256GB of flash storage. A higher-end variant with 512GB of flash storage, more RAM and a faster processor will also be available for $1,599.
The new 12.1-inch MacBook will start shipping from April 10th.
