Few days back Pangu team successfully demoed the eagerly awaited iOS 8.3 jailbreak at the Mobile Security Conference in Shanghai. They have also indicated that they will release the iOS 8.3 jailbreak after iOS 8.4 is released to the public. Apple announced at the WWDC 2015 Keynote that they will be launching Apple Music with iOS 8.4 on June 30th.
Since it is not clear if Pangu’s iOS 8.3 jailbreak works with iOS 8.4, users who want to jailbreak their iPhone or iPad are confused whether they should upgrade to iOS 8.3 right now, or whether they should wait for iOS 8.4 to be released.
So we thought it might be a good idea to go through the various scenarios and give our advice on what you should do.
iOS 8.1.2 or lower
If you’ve jailbroken your device on iOS 8.1.2 or lower, then we would recommend you to hold off upgrading to iOS 8.3, and wait for the jailbreak to be released, and confirmed to be working fine.
The same applies when iOS 8.4 is released.
iOS 8.1.3 – iOS 8.2
If your device is on iOS 8.1.3 – iOS 8.3 i.e. iOS versions that cannot be jailbroken, then you could install the iOS 8.3 update. But you don’t need to do it right now. You will be able to install iOS 8.3 even after iOS 8.4 is released as Apple usually continues signing the previous version for one to two weeks.
The best case scenario is, Pangu team confirms that their tool supports iOS 8.4, in which case you can upgrade directly to iOS 8.4 when the Pangu Jailbreak is released, and jailbreak your device.
It is also important to note that a number of people are facing battery life issues after installing iOS 8.3.
Should I install iOS 8.4 when it is released to the public?
The golden rule of jailbreaking is to avoid updating to the latest version to improve your chances of jailbreaking your iOS device.
You shouldn’t upgrade to iOS 8.4 when it is released to the public. It would be prudent to wait for the Pangu team to confirm if their jailbreak tool will be compatible with iOS 8.4. If Apple has fixed a vulnerability in iOS 8.4 used by them, then the Pangu jailbreak may not work with iOS 8.4.
However, we wouldn’t wait too long for the confirmation. If Pangu team does not confirm if their jailbreak tool works with iOS 8.4 within 24 – 48 hours of the iOS 8.4 release, then we would recommend installing iOS 8.3 (if you’re on iOS 8.1.2 – iOS 8.2 – iOS versions that cannot be jailbroken currently). You can use our guide if you need help to install iOS 8.3 once iOS 8.4 is released.
Even if Pangu team confirms that their jailbreak works with iOS 8.4, we would still wait for it to be released and tested before upgrading to iOS 8.4.
