Dish is a company that’s known better for providing satellites and set-top boxes to its customers, but it’s apparently ready to branch out.
As Engadget reports, Dish is now offering a smartphone repair service, aptly entitled “Smart Phone Repair,” which covers a variety of different phones. As long as those phones are iPhones. As of right now, the service only covers the iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s, and the iPhone 6s Plus. No iPhone SE yet, and it doesn’t seem likely that Dish will support older iPhone units.
However, the company does say that support for other devices will be available “in the coming months.”
As far as pricing goes, you’ll need to pay $35 in an up-front, one-time fee to get a Dish repairman out to your house or place of business. After that, you’ll pay anywhere between $40 and $190 depending on the type of repair that’s necessary to fix your device. That is indeed less than what Apple would charge if accidental damage does happen, especially if you aren’t covered by AppleCare+.
As for why Dish is getting into this type of business, the company’s Executive VP of Operations, John Swieringa, says their technicians are “uniquely positioned with the technical know-how,” to get the job done.
Here’s the list of prices, per device:
One thing worth mentioning is that you don’t actually need to be a Dish subscriber to take advantage of the repair service.[via Engadget; Dish]
