Apple Watch 2 Rumors: What to Expect

Apple Watch
Apple this week sent out invitations to a special press event that will be held on September 7th at the Bill Graham Civic Center in San Francisco, Calfornia. Besides the highly anticipated iPhone 7, the company is expected to introduce its second generation Apple Watch 2. Apple’s next generation wearable is predicted to be a modest upgrade over the existing model, which hit the market in the spring of 2015. What updates will Apple include in its upcoming Watch product? Read on find out what the prevailing rumors claim Apple has in store for us next week.

The second generation Watch is expected to see several key improvements that address some of the shortcomings of the first generation Watch. According to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the flagship feature of the Apple Watch 2 likely will be GPS functionality that provides even better fitness tracking and navigation. Other enhancements may include a faster processor for improved responsiveness, better waterproofing so owners possibly can wear the Watch while swimming or showering and a barometer. Another significant change in the Watch 2 involves battery capacity, which could be boosted by as much as 35 percent due to the inclusion of a 334 mAh battery.

Apple also may replace the Gorilla Glass of the Apple Watch with a new “One Glass Solution” display that is lighter thinner than the Corning, scratch resistant screens. The new One Glass display would lighten the weight of the device and give Apple extra room to fit components like a beefier battery. Early Apple Watch rumors hinted Apple would add health-related sensors to its second generation Watch, but recent inside information suggests these features are still under development. Apple also allegedly wanted to add LTE support to the Apple Watch but abandoned that plan due to adverse effects on battery life.

On the design side, rumors suggest Apple Watch will keep the same screen sizes and form factor of its predecessor. This was done to appease existing owners allowing them to upgrade and keep their expensive Watch bands and accessories for another product cycle. Along with a new Watch, Apple likely will debut several new band options and possible new Watch materials. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also claims Apple will introduce an upgraded original Apple Watch, with a faster processor and improved waterproofing. This beefed-up Apple Watch will drop the advanced features, such as the GPS, of the Watch 2 and will ship with a lower price tag, providing an affordable alternative to Apple Watch 2. If the Watch 2 is announced look for pre-orders to start within the weeks following the event and the official retail debut shortly after the pre-oder period has commenced.

Apple will hold its September press event starting at 10 AM PT or 1 PM ET.  As it has done in the past, the company will provide a live stream of the announcement which will be available on the company’s website.
