Apple Says 90 Percent Original Apple Chargers and Cables Sold on Amazon Are Fake

Planning on buying an Apple charger or cable for your iPhone or Mac from Amazon? Think again. As per Apple, more than 90 percent of the cables and chargers that are sold under Apple’s name on Amazon.com are fake.

In a bid to protect customers from counterfeit products, Apple purchased a number of power adapters, cables and other charging solutions sold directly on Amazon.com and almost all of them turned out to be counterfeit. With third-party sellers on Amazon, the situation is even worse. The company says that over the last nine months it purchased over 100 chargers and cables for the iPhone and other Apple devices, and the company’s internal testing revealed that almost 90 percent of them were counterfeit.

Besides posing a threat to consumer safety, Apple says that counterfeit products also damage its brand reputation. The company has sued Mobile Star LLC, which was revealed by Amazon as the primary supplier of these fake chargers and cables.

Apple recently purchased a number of Apple power adapters and charging and syncing cables (collectively “power products”) that were directly sold by Amazon.com – not a third party seller – and determined that they were counterfeit. Amazon.com informed Apple that Mobile Star was its source for the majority of these counterfeit Apple products. Amazon.com turned over to Apple additional inventory of Apple power products that Amazon.com had purchased from Mobile Star, and Apple determined that the vast majority of these products were counterfeit.

Most consumers buying Apple chargers and cables buying them through Amazon.com don’t usually worry about counterfeit products since they are sold directly on Amazon.com. However, by selling counterfeit products, MobileStar LLC put the reputation of Apple, Amazon, and consumer safety on the line.

Apple has asked the Court to award it all profit and gains that MobileStar LLC has made from selling counterfeit products and has also pressed for damages running into millions of dollars.

Update:
