Apple recently updated its system status page to better reflect reported issues. But, it also has a new trick: Reporting upcoming maintenance blackouts.
As reported by MacRumors, Apple currently has the Apple Online Store listed for “Upcoming Maintenance” beginning at 12:00 AM Pacific Time and going until 5:30 AM Pacific time (3:00 AM Eastern Time, 8:30 AM Eastern Time, respectively). In the description of the planned outage, Apple only says that the Apple Online Store will be “updated and unavailable during this time.”
The timing of the downtime is certainly noteworthy, considering the constant rumors that Apple has plans to launch new products this month. Specifically, last week a report surfaced saying that Apple would be announcing new products this week, but it remains unknown just what Apple has plans to reveal. At the time, the report indicated that Apple could simply announce new products alongside a press release, and an updated Apple Online Store, and this scheduled maintenance has many assuming this could be the case.
As for what Apple could announce next week, or whenever they decide to announce something new, the main theory is that it will be new iPad Pro models, including a brand new variant that measures in at 10.5 inches. The new iPad Pro units are expected to be moderate upgrades from the first generation models, with no major overhauls in place — other than the new screen size, with minimal bezels.
Some rumors have suggested a 128GB iPhone SE is also in the works, but that rumor has weaker legs at this point.
A recent rumor has also suggested that Apple could launch a 9.7-inch “iPad Pro 2” with little fanfare, so it’s possible that this scheduled maintenance could herald the arrival of a new iPad Pro model.
Or, it’s perfectly possible that the Appel Online Store really is seeing scheduled maintenance, and no new products will see the light of day tomorrow. Either way, we don’t have long to wait.[via MacRumors; Apple]
