Back in October, the YouTube TV team announced that the app would arrive on Apple TV “soon”. Unfortunately, that didn’t pan out.
In December, the team announced that the app for Apple’s set-top box had been delayed to sometime in 2018, with no official launch date to circle on the calendar. However, in a statement made today to CNET, the app is confirmed to arrive on the Apple TV “very soon”, so at least those who have been waiting to try out YouTube TV on their Apple TV know that the app is still being worked on.
Here is the statement from YouTube:
“In addition to Roku, a YouTube representative confirmed to CNET that the app for Apple TV is ‘coming very soon.'”
The good sign here is that when YouTube TV was delayed for Apple TV last year, it was also delayed for Roku-branded streaming devices as well. At the time it was confirmed that the app would arrive for those options in “early 2018,” and sure enough that turned out to be the case. So, Apple TV owners that want to try Google’s option for cutting the cord might not have too much longer to wait.
YouTube TV starts at $35 per month. However, like many of the other options out there, customers can choose to add “premium channels” to the mix, which can increase the monthly price quite a bit, depending on how many options they want to bring to the fore.
Better late than never, as the old saying goes. YouTube TV is growing into a popular option, with the latest tally pointing to the service having over 300,000 subscribers in its early stages of life. While customers can already use AirPlay to stream content to an Apple TV, having the native app will probably boost customer support.
