Amazon’s Alexa is Randomly Laughing at People

Digital personal assistants are meant to help us in any way they can, which usually means offering up some quick information in the familiar voice.

But apparently for some Amazon Alexa fans, it also means getting laughed at randomly. The Verge has confirmed with Amazon that the company’s digital personal assistant is currently randomly, unapologetically and very creepily laughing at people. Here is one case:

As the date on that tweet showcases, this is something that has been going on for a bit of time already. Amazon, for its part, has confirmed that Alexa is indeed randomly laughing at Alexa-enabled devices, like the Echo and Echo Dot. The company has also said that it is working on a fix.

Here’s another one. A video that showcases the laughing in real-time:

While Amazon has confirmed that it is working on a fix, there is no word on what, exactly, is causing the issue to begin with. As many people have pointed out, this can definitely be a strange situation, especially if you’re home alone and you’re not interacting with Alexa at all. Having your digital personal assistant just start laughing at you for no reason would be a bit worrisome.

Have you run into this issue at all, or know anyone who has?

Our Take

This is pretty funny across the board. It is creepy, to be sure, but when it isn’t happening to you it is still pretty funny. One has to wonder if Amazon is actually going to say why this was happening.
