Apple Announces new AirPods (2nd Gen) with 50% More Talk Time, Optional Wireless Charging Case

Apple today announced the 2nd generation AirPods with a new Qi-compatible wireless charging case and always-on hands-free ‘Hey Siri’.

The new AirPods (2nd generation) also comes with a new H1 wireless chip for improved wireless performance and efficiency, more battery life, and more. The new H1 wireless chip features a custom audio architecture that helps it offer improved music quality and up to 50 percent more talk time when compared to the original AirPods.

“AirPods delivered a magical wireless experience and have become one of the most beloved products we’ve ever made. They connect easily with all of your devices, and provide crystal clear sound and intuitive, innovative control of your music and audio,” said Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “The world’s best wireless headphones just got even better with the new AirPods. They are powered by the new Apple-designed H1 chip which brings an extra hour of talk time, faster connections, hands-free ‘Hey Siri’ and the convenience of a new wireless battery case.”

The new wireless chip will make it faster to switch AirPods connection between an iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch. Apple claims it offers 2x faster switching times, 1.5x faster connection time for phone calls, and offers 30 percent lower latency.

With the charging case, the new AirPods (2nd generation) offers more than 24 hours of “listening time.” Apple is not bundling the Qi wireless charging case with the new AirPods. Instead, that is an optional accessory which costs extra.

The new AirPods (2nd generation) with the standard charging case cost $159, while the one with wireless charging case will set users back by $199. The new AirPods are already up for pre-order and hit Apple Stores next week. Apple is also offering free personal engraving to the AirPods case for customers who order the second-generation AirPods using its Apple Store app or via
