iOS 12

Apple today released iOS 12.2 for compatible iPhones and iPads. The latest release of iOS 12 comes with a number of new features and enhancements and it is probably the last major feature-packed release of the OS before we see Apple unveil iOS 13 at WWDC 2019.

iOS 12.2 adds four new Animojis, brings about major AirPlay 2 related improvements, and more. Most importantly, iOS 12.2 adds Apple News+ support to iPhones and iPad in the United States and Canada.

It also adds support for the 2nd generation AirPods which will be making its way to customers from tomorrow. Other improvements in iOS 12.2 include improved quality of audio messages in iMessages, 5G E indicator for iPhone users on AT&T network, updated AirPlay 2 icon, HomeKit support for AirPlay 2 compatible devices, and more. iOS 12.2 also includes a number of bug fixes.

Apple seeded the first beta of iOS 12.2 to developers back in late January.  Alongside iOS 12.2, Apple has also released watchOS 5.2 and tvOS 12.2 with new features and enhancements.

Below is a quick overview of some of the new features in iOS 12.2:

  • Updated Screen Mirroring Icon in Control Center: Apple has updated the Screen Mirroring icon in Control Center, making it a bit more obvious that you are mirroring two screens.
  • Faster Way to Add Money to Apple Cash: Apple has added an “Add Money” option when you tap on the Apple Pay Cash in the Wallet app. This makes it easier to quickly add funds.
  • A New AirPlay Icon: Apple has updated the AirPlay icon in Control Center, putting it more in line with the icon on other platforms like macOS.
  • Apple Shows Better Info for Unsecure Websites: Apple now shows “Not Secured” on an unsecured website in the URL, making it more obvious that a site isn’t offering an HTTPS connection.
  • Apple Maps Can Now Show Air Quality: You can find air quality for an area within the stock Weather app, but Apple is now bringing that information to Apple Maps. It can be turned on in the Maps Settings section.

Post the iOS 12.2 update, iPhone and iPad users in Canada will also be able to access Apple News. Alongside iOS 12.2, Apple has also released watchOS 5.2 and tvOS 12.2 with new features and enhancements.
