Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives believes that Apple will be launching the AirPods 3 before the holiday season this year. The wireless earbuds will feature some design enhancements and carry a higher price point due to their water-resistant design.
Apple updated the AirPods earlier this year but the improvements were primarily related to battery life and latency reduction. There were no design or sound quality-related improvements. These AirPods were supposed to launch last year itself but Apple had to delay the launch for some reason.
We have been hearing about Apple working on a new pair of AirPods with water-resistant design for quite a while now. It will also feature a new surface coating for better grip. Reports have also claimed that third-generation AirPods will feature active noise cancellation, though analyst Ives does not make any such claim in his note.
Lastly from a new product perspective, we are expecting AirPods new version 3 to be launched towards year-end ahead of holiday season with these AirPods expected to have some design enhancements and will be waterproof with higher price points.
Apple does offer the Powerbeats Pro under the Beats branding which offers superior sound quality, a water-resistant design, and improved fit and finish compared to regular AirPods. However, they are bulkier and are meant for rugged use compared to the AirPods.
It is entirely possible that just like last year, Apple ends up delaying the launch of AirPods 3 due to some manufacturing issues. If not, given the popularity of the wireless earbuds, I expect them to be in short supply for at least the first couple of months after their launch.[Via Ped30]
