Nintendo launched Mario Kart Tour for Android and iOS a couple of days back. The latest from Nintendo has already proven to be a blockbuster hit with 20 million downloads so far. Now App analytics website Apptopia says that Mario Kart Tour has hit 10.1 million downloads on the day of release. The download figures include iOS and Android. This makes it Nintendo’s most popular game ever.
Talking numbers, Super Mario Run could rake in only 4.7 million downloads while the Pokemon GO hit 6.7 million downloads on their respective launch days. The graph below pegs Mario Kart Tour downloads against that of popular titles like Fortnite and Clash Royale.
Nintendo has not ported the game as is to iPhones and iPads. You control the kart with just one finger on the screen and slide it left/right to control the vehicle. There are no on-screen controls here that one usually finds in similar mobile games. In other words, the cart moves automatically while all you need to do is steer it in the right direction. As of now, you can only play with computer-controlled opponents in a series of race. Nintendo says that it has a multiplayer mode in the pipeline.
As with most of the freemium games, you can either win races to unlock drivers or you can simply pay money to get ahead. Needless to say, the game is designed in such a way that you are tempted to spend money to progress/win races. The game is divided into cups and each cups has three races and a final challenge to proceed to the next level.
The game offers a Gold Pass subscription for $4.99/month using which one can unlock a faster 200cc kart along with other in-game items. Nintendo is offering a two-week trial of this subscription service. Furthermore, the game also offers a set of items that can be bought once every two weeks for $20. According to SensorTower, Mario Kart Tour has already raked in more than $1 million in its first day. With the growing popularity, there is no doubt that the revenues will only go up.[via Apptopia]
