Apple will reportedly be launching a 65W GaN charger later this year. A number of other tech companies are also working on releasing GaN chargers this year.
The charger will sport a USB-C port and allow for up to 65W fast charging. Xiaomi, Huawei, OPPO, and others are also working on a similar charger.
GaN or Gallium Nitride chargers are smaller and offer higher efficiency than traditional silicon-based chargers. So far, we have seen GaN chargers from third-party accessory makers and they have been notably smaller than their silicon counterparts. This 61W charger from Choetech up to 50% smaller than a regular 60W MacBook Pro charger and also more efficient. This RAVPower charger is also made of GaN and offers 61W output and supports USB-PD 3.0. Xiaomi also recently released a 65W GaN charger with USB-C Power Delivery support.
Apple could very well debut this 65W GaN charger with a 13-inch MacBook Pro refresh later this year. The company currently bundles a 61W USB-C charger with the machine. A smaller charger will make it easier for consumers to carry around and it is always appreciated by end-users.
GaN chargers are definitely the future and it is just a matter of time before Apple ends up moving even its regular iPhone charger to Gallium Nitride technology.[Via ITHome]
