Apple has seemingly started working on the AirPower project again internally. The rumor comes from YouTuber @jon_prosser. As per the rumor, Apple engineers are trying to re-engineer the coils so as to displace heat more effectively and the charger is under the prototyping stage.
There is no guarantee that Apple will solve the AirPower’s thermal issues and launch it to the public though. The company had initially announced the AirPower alongside the iPhone X in 2017. It was first supposed to launch in early 2018 but Apple then completely went silent on it and completely canceled it in March 2019. As per reports, Apple was struggling to overcome the heating issues of the AirPower and the interference which was being caused by so many charging coils being placed close to each other in a confined space.
AirPower isn’t dead 👀
The project is back on, internally. No guarantee that they’ll finalize and release it, but they haven’t given up yet and they’re trying to re-engineer the coils to displace heat more effectively. Prototyping is underway.

It is possible that Apple is now working on a completely new wireless charging for the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods with a new design. Since the announcement of the AirPower, we have seen quite a few wireless chargers hit the market that promise to wirelessly charge three devices at once. However, they all have designated spots where one needs to keep the devices for them to start charging.
Reputed and reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo did claim at the beginning of this year that Apple could launch a wireless charging mat this year. It is possible that the leak from today refers to the same charging mat.
Are you still looking forward to an AirPower-like wireless charging mat?
