Apple has decided to offer HomePods at a discount to its employees. The HomePod retails at $299 but Apple retail and corporate employees can buy it for $149 which translates to a 50 percent discount on retail price.
In all likelihood, Apple is trying to clear HomePod stock and thus offering huge discounts for its employees. The HomePod is known for its outstanding sound quality. Despite that HomePod has been lagging behind Alexa and Google Home when it comes to market share. It seems like Apple is having a hard time offloading its HomePod inventory.
The company is rumored to be working on a HomePod update which is expected to be launched later this year. Recently, HomePod has gained many useful features like Multi-User support, Ambient Sound and Handoff.
Apple pulled the wraps from HomePod in 2018 and at the time of launch, it was priced at $349. After a year, Apple reduced the price to $200. Furthermore, Apple has also run holiday promotion for HomePod. Unlike other Apple products, it seems HomePod is not exactly selling like hotcakes. In fact, HomePod accounts for just 5 percent of smart speaker sales in the U.S.
Apple was expected to launch HomePod in India. However, they are yet to do so. If rumors are to be believed, Apple might be working on an affordable HomePod that offers a similar set of features. Bloomberg recently reported that New Apple TV, HomePod, iMacs, iPads will be launched this year. That being said, the COVID-19 outbreak is a deep concern and might force Apple to postpone some of its launches.[via MacGeneration]
