Apple was widely expected to launch the much-awaited iPhone 12 series in September. However, according to analyst Jeff Pu from Chinese research firm GF Securities, the launch of at least the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 model may be delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
In a new research report, Pu claims that the current “EVT” or “Engineering Verification Test” stage of iPhone 12 development may have been extended by two weeks to late April for the 5.4-inch model and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 models, and to mid-May for the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 model.
So Pu expects the 5.4-inch iPhone 12, 6.1-inch iPhone 12, and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro models to be launched in September, followed by the launch of 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max model in October. Apple has staggered the launch of new iPhone models in 2017 and 2018 as well, but it seems strange that Apple would stagger the launch of the iPhone 12 Pro models.
This is not the first time we have heard about the possibility of iPhone 12 release getting delayed. Back in March, a report had claimed that the launch of its 5G iPhones could be delayed by months due to the COVID-19 pandemic as it has affected global demand and disrupted the company’s supply chain. However, another report had refuted this claim citing Apple’s Taiwanese suppliers that the 5G iPhone launch was on track. A Bloomberg report citing “people familiar with the matter” also claimed that the 5G iPhone 12 launch is still scheduled for September.
We won’t be surprised if iPhone 12 release date is delayed to October given the current situation where most of the US is locked down. We also expect some delays in the release of iOS 14, the next major update for iPhone, which is expected to come preinstalled in iPhone 12. Apple has announced that WWDC 2020, it’s biggest event of the year will be a online-only event due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Pu also expects Apple to launch the much awaited iPhone SE 2 (or iPhone 9) this week. The new iPhone SE is expected to feature a 4.7-inch display, Touch ID, A13 chip, 3GB of RAM, and up to 256GB of storage. Apple is expected to price the new entry level model for $399.
According to rumors, the 6.7-inch iPhone 12 Pro Max and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 Pro model will be higher-end OLED devices with triple-lens cameras, while the 5.4 and 6.1-inch iPhone 12 models will be lower-end iPhones with dual-lens cameras and a more affordable price tag. All iPhone 12 models are expected to feature OLED displays and support 5G.
Would you be disappointed if the launch of iPhone 12 Pro Max is delayed?[via MacRumors]
